Midseason Update: GM Basketball

Isaac Petkac, Sports Writer/General Mclane Radio Play by Play Announcer

Hard to believe, isn’t it? Just a couple months ago, we were talking about football playoffs. Now, the winter sports season is halfway complete. Here is a recap of both the Boys and Girls seasons so far, as well as some things to look for in the rest of January and February.

Boys: To say that the season has been a roller coaster ride is an understatement. So far, the Lancers are 7-5, and 3-2 in Region 6. GM started out the season 2-0, before losing two consecutive home games to Greenville and Cathedral Prep. After splitting the next two contests, the Lancers would win four in a row, their longest streak of the season. Wins included Harbor Creek, who is currently ahead of GM in the region, and Fort Leboeuf. The Lancers have had it tough as of late, though. GM has lost its last two games by a combined eight points, including blowing a 15 point halftime lead at Conneaut. Lineup changes could be coming, but one thing remains constant: if this team wants to make a deep run, they will have to hit more peaks than valleys as the season continues.

Keys to the Second Half:

1: Score. A Lot. GM averages over 70 points a game, so it’s no secret that the key for this team is offense. If the Lancers can continue to put points up on the board, and increase that average to 75 ppg, they can get to the top in Region 6.

2: Sophomore Success: Josh Schreiber and Seth Myers have been key assets off the bench for GM. Depth is a major key to be able to make a long run, and the sophomores are big reason to believe the Lancers can make it deep into the playoffs.

Girls: Maybe I should just copy my comment about a roller coaster ride above, and paste it on to this section. The girls team is currently 6-7, and have had some long streaks to get to that mark. After a tough season in 2015, 2016 was not very kind to the team either, as they lost their first four games, with three of those losses being by 10 points or more. However, unlike last season, a different, more resilient team arose after that. GM respond to win six of their next nine games, which included a four game winning streak, to push their overall record to that 6-7 mark. Many questions still cloud the second half of the season, but there is no questioning the resilience of this Lady Lancer team in 2017. Maybe, even, a playoff opportunity.

Keys to the Second Half:

1: Keep Competitive: The transition from last year to this year is remarkable. GM has already won twice as many games as they had won last year, and is in contention for a playoff spot. By staying aggressive on offense and keeping their foot on the gas, this team can make a strong run.

2: Nothing is Impossible: With a group of young starters, there is a lot of room to grow for GM. By continuing to build team chemistry, the Lady Lancers could be a well oiled machine come the end of the season and playoffs.
