“Healthier is happier,” says Heidi Lutz, owner of the Juice Jar on West 8th Street, in Erie.  The Juice Jar is a private and locally owned business, that strives to bring “nutritional healing” to Erie.  The Juice Jar provides an outlet where people can buy freshly made juices, smoothies, bakery items, and meals.  This health-conscious business was inspired by Lutz’s own choice to change her eating habits to a healthier lifestyle of hearty foods and juicing.  This occurred after she was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a disease that causes inflammation of the digestive system.  All of the items at the Juice Jar, are nutritious items that promote this same healthy lifestyle, that positively impacted Lutz’s life.

Many of the menu items cater to vegans and celiacs, individuals who cannot eat anything that contains gluten;  Therefore, they can be enjoyed by everyone.  Juicing comes with many benefits.  It utilizes 100 percent of the nutrients from fruits and vegetables, increases energy, and removes toxins from the body.  It even allows the body to obtain the healthy amount of servings and needed nutrients.  According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the average individual should eat two to four servings of fruits and three to five servings of vegetables.  A serving of fruit is equivalent to one medium fruit (medium is considered the size of a baseball), 1/2 cup cooked, chopped, or canned fruit, or 3/4 cup of fruit juice.  A serving of vegetables is equal to one cup of raw leafy vegetables, 1/2 cup of other cooked or chopped raw vegetables, or 3/4 cup of vegetable juice.  Juicing gives the ability to reach this healthy nutritive goal.

The Lancer Ledger Newspaper Team was fortunate enough to visit and experience this innovative store.  The Juice Jar is clean, quaint, and adorned with charming pinterest-worthy decor.  Upon entering you are greeted by smiling faces who are ready to take your order.  There are a variety of different menu items from which you can select.  From wholesome beverages to tasty energy bites to scrumptious wraps, the Juice Jar has a little bit of everything.

The Newspaper Squad would recommend the Sunrise smoothie, which consists of an invigorating blend of fresh tropical fruit.  Senior Ellen Valerio described it as “frozen, thick, sweet, and delicious.”  Junior Beth Abbate said that she would “recommend the Sugar Rush juice to anyone who likes pineapple,” as it is a mixture of fresh mango, orange, and pineapple juices.  Mrs. Zona had the seasonal Sham Shake smoothie which was a thick green blend of avocado, mint, vanilla, spinach, banana, coconut sugar and almond milk.  “It was very filling, but I enjoy the Namasay, which is a mixture of blueberries, kale, bananas and almond milk, better.  They both have a very mellow taste.” The prices range from $5.50 to $9.00, depending on the specific beverage that you order.  And although pricey, the group concurred that the cost of the fresh and organic ingredients was worth it.

Aside from having healthy menu items, the Juice Jar also creates a welcoming environment and atmosphere.  “It was super relaxed in there and perfect for studying or just catching up on the news,” said Senior Jon Carrier.  The Juice Jar gives off a peaceful aura, that leaves you relaxed and content.  For a nourishing meal and a place to unwind, make the trip down to the Juice Jar and work your way toward a healthier body, mind, and spirit.
