Mathie Competes at Nationals

Senior Tony Mathie recently competed in the USAA Cross Cross Country Junior National Championships in Lake Placid, NY.  The event featured the very best aspiring American junior nordic ski racers, the winners of which will comprise Team USA.  

Mathie competed in the event as a member of the Wilderness Wildcats, a group affiliated with the Wilderness Lodge is Wattsburg, Pa.  Mathie made it to nationals by racing in a number of qualifiers in upstate NY, where he was ranked one of the 15 best cross-country skiers between the ages of 16 and 19 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Once at Nationals, he competed with the 18 and 19 year old skiers who qualified, many of whom are already competing on college teams. Mathie placed 51st in the Under 20 10K Freestyle, 57th in the U20 Classic Sprint, 54th in the U20 15K Classic, and was on the 18th place relay team in the U20 Freestyle Relay.

“I would have liked to do better, but it is what it is,” stated Mathie, who really only began nordic ski training during his sophomore year.  

Nonetheless, it is a commendable achievement.  On whether he plans to continue to pursue the sport after graduation Mathie stated, “I hope to, but I don’t know my plans post high school yet.”
