Mr. Yates and his Golden Apple Award

Faith Morrow , Editorial Board

“It was actually pretty breathtaking,” is how Jayda Plonski, junior, described seeing Mr. Yates receive a Golden Apple Award on December 13th. The Golden Apple Award is presented to teachers who are nominated by students like Jayda Plonski. Plonski nominated Mr. Yates after a discussion with Mrs. Blount on how to recognize all he has done for the school. “After being a part of the musical, I saw… how much he cared for everyone. He deserved a little more than a ‘Thank you’,” Plonski commented. The morning Plonski was notified that her nomination was confirmed, Jet 24 came to GM at 12, interviewed some people, presented the award, and filmed some of his Holiday Choir class.

“I was shocked. It made me feel awesome,” Mr. Yates stasted on how he felt to receive the award. The nomination was a total surprise to him and he felt appreciated by Plonski’s essay and thoughtful sign of recognition. With teary eyes, Mr. Yates commented, “I love the kids that I teach… It’s very emotional for me and it is very, very nice.” Though he doesn’t know yet where to put his Golden Apple Award plaque, he says he’ll find the “perfect spot for it” in his room.
