On January 26, 2020, a helicopter flying through Calabasas, California, in bad weather, took a tragic turn for the worst. The helicopter was carrying basketball legend Kobe Bryant, along with his daughter Gianna, and 7 others that were close to the Bryant family. Many sports fanatics and communities have been affected by the crash.

Kobe Bryant was loved by many for his personality and basketball career. Social studies teacher, Maximilian Knight, says, “This is so tragic because of how it so unexpectedly happened.”

Kobe’s absence has left a gaping hole not only in the basketball community but also in his fan’s lives. His passion for the game was felt in every move he made on the court. And after dedicating 20 years to the sport and earning many awards as a result of his commiment, the Washington Post declared that “he seemed to understand the fleeting nature…of his life…and he managed to accomplish more than almost anyone could.”

Although he could have been proud of his successful career, when Kobe was asked what he was most proud of he said being a father.

Kobe’s daughter Gianna, also known as “Gigi” Bryant was among the victims of the crash. She was only 13 years old, and one of four of Kobe’s daughters. Gianna was very special because of how amazing she was at basketball. Her death is very tragic, as she was just beginning to be recognized as a female basketball player in California.

From the crash, people have learned how soon life could end, and for everyone to hold their loved ones near and dear everyday.
