After interviewing over 45 student athletes from GM the school’s biggest rival is…… a tie! freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, involved in all sports, along with a few teachers involved with GM athletics were asked about what sport(s) they participated in and who their rival was for that sport.

Of course, one of the schools that tied for first place was Cathedral Prep/Villa. They were voted our biggest rivals in football and wrestling, and have many votes in other sports such as basketball, track and field, and soccer, with a total of 14 votes out of the 47. When senior member of the soccer team Jordan Rys was asked about Prep’s soccer team, he responded straight and to the point. “ I don’t like them and I have no respect for them.” Junior track and field member and soccer player, Eugene Reap, also chose Prep for the biggest rival in both sports. He dislikes them because “they are good.”

The other school that tied with Prep/Villa was the Girard Yellowjackets. A large majority of the 14 votes in favor of Girard were from the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Senior Alex Andrzejewski thinks that “Girard is our biggest rival because of the crowds the basketball teams, boys and girls, draw when they play each other.”

“The Girard-GM boys basketball rivalry goes back to the 80s-90s” said Mr. Banks. “We’ve both had good teams for a long time so we’re just naturally rivals.”

Other schools that were often brought up were the boys’ Harborcreek soccer team, the Ft. LeBoeuf volleyball team, Warren softball team, and the McDowell wrestling team. Who do you view as our biggest rival?  Respond to our poll and let us know!
