App of the Month: Fallout Shelter

Wyatt Chernicky, Reporter

This month, several of my friends and I have found a wonderful gaming app called “Fallout Shelter.” In this game, you are thrust into the post-nuclear apocalyptic world of Fallout. The tutorial was fairly short and straight to the point, so you can jump right into the action. The game does offer in app purchases although they are not required to fully enjoy this game.
You take on the role of the vault’s overseer, and your job is to ensure the survival of your vault dwellers. Lunchboxes and caps, the game’s currency, are awarded for completing certain objectives, giving you a bit of a boost. The three main resources that you must produce are food, water, and power. Food and water keep your dwellers happy, power keeps your rooms running, allowing you to produce food and water. One of the more comedic/realistic sides to this game is the ability to allow your dwellers to actually reproduce and expand your workforce.
You may send your dwellers outside of the vault to explore the Wasteland and gather additional supplies. Just make sure that they are properly equipped, and they are not left to wander for too long, as they will inevitably succumb to the elements, radiation, and predation. Other obstacles include rooms catching on fire, mole rats, Radroaches, Deathclaws, and raiders attacking your vault and trying to steal your precious resources.
The app is a perfect appetizer to hold over fans who are anxiously awaiting the release of “Fallout: 4” from Bethesda Game Studios.
